Toca Robot Lab by Toca Boca is a super app for any little robot fans out there. Kids will love assembling their own robots by choosing the legs, arms, body and head. Once created there is even more fun to be had by flying your robot around the testing area where it whizzes about collecting stars and knocking over various obstacles such as balls and blocks until it reaches the magnet after which you get a Toca Robot Lab Test report. You can then start all over again and build another robot. Like all Toca Boca apps, the graphics and interactive features in Toca Robot Lab are fantastic and the design is kid friendly and engaging.
When you load the app, click the arrow to start play. A conveyor belt appears with a selection of legs, select a pair and drag it on screen. Next select the body, head and arms. Now your robot is ready to fly, collect stars and knock over balls or blocks along your way to the magnet. A Test Robot Lab Test report then appears and you can build another robot. Each time you build a robot the flying levels get slightly harder with more obstacles to navigate about as you search for stars which keeps it engaging and challenging for kids.
The sounds used really enhance this app, in particular the noise as each part of the body gets fused together just like a soldering iron is being used. If you select a head with a TV monitor or similar screen; the eyes, nose and mouth appear which resemble Eva's from Wall-E which is a very nice feature. There is no right or wrong way to build a robot and you can spend as long as you like flying it about the test area once built. The arms, legs, body and head don't have to match in type and the robot can be as random looking as your child likes which is great for encouraging creativity. I am a firm believer that an app such as this where kids are given options to select from is beneficial in developing decision making skills and confidence from an early age. Ben definitely loves all the cool robots he can make and spends ages flying them about exploring the test area.
Toca Robot Lab is available to download from the App Store for £1.49 and is compatible with both iPad and iPhone.
