Ben's top iPhone / iPad app this week: Green Eggs and Ham - Dr Seuss

Ben loves books and he also loves my iPad so when I came across some Dr Seuss apps I thought I'd give them a go. There are currently twenty two full version Dr Seuss digital books and lots more Lite versions available to download so there are plenty to choose from. These apps are universal which means once downloaded you can use them with any of your Apple devices which I think is fantastic! I downloaded three of the free Lite versions including Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat and Dr Seuss's ABC to start with and Ben's favourite so far is Green Eggs and Ham. The Lite versions have ten pages of the books so you really do get a feel for the app before you decide whether you want to buy the full version. I've found it very handy to have these books available on my iPhone and iPad especially when I have been in the car or waiting somewhere and need to keep Ben entertained.

When you load the app you are given three options, Read To Me, Read It Myself and Auto Play. Each of these modes have their merits in different situations, I like reading books to Ben and he enjoys the silly voices I make so it is great to always have a book available on my iPhone or iPad to read in a traditional way. However I have found the Read To Me and Auto Play modes fantastic for when we are in the car and the app really does keep him occupied. It is worth noting that in the Read To Me mode words are underlined as the story is read which I would imagine helps when learning to read. Also, the pages of the book are interactive, in that if you touch an item on screen the word appears and it says the name helping with picture / word association.

The word 'dog' appears when the dog is touched on screen

Words are highlighted as story is narrated

Ben really enjoys these books, so much so I will be purchasing a few of the full versions as I really think they are worth the money. It is nice having books available to read anywhere we go without having to actually carry them around in the off chance you might get to read them - a very nearly two year old is heavy enough to cart around on his own :).

The Green Eggs and Ham - Dr Seuss Lite app is available to download from the AppStore for free and the full version costs £2.49. Both apps are compatible with the iPhone, iPod, touch and iPad.
