Ben's top iPad / iPhone app this week: In The Night Garden

Like most toddlers Ben is a big In The Night Garden fan so it is no surprise that he likes this app. The app features all the well know ITNG characters such as Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy, Makka Pakka and the Tombliboos in their surroundings along with the familiar songs from the show which makes it instantly recognisable to little fans. When I first installed this app on my iPhone last year I remember being a little bit disappointed by it but since then there has been another game added to the Activity section called Washing which Ben loves and I believe has made it worth getting for your little one to play with.

Once loaded four options appear on screen. Options which allows you to set the volume, More Fun which links to the Teletubbies app, ITNG magazine and live show and the two main game modes which are Dancing and Activities. I do think that this screen would be more child friendly if it just had Dancing and Activities here to avoid little fingers tapping the other options by mistake. Dancing let's you choose between Upsy Daisy, Igglepiggle and Makka Pakka who, when selected dance to their well known individual song from the show. Its fun to sing along to (yes, I admit I do know all the words and I do sing along) and you can tap the screen and sparkles appear but apart from that this section is not very interactive. The Activities section allows you to select between Hiding and Washing and is where all the interactive fun lies. In the Hiding activity you have to find the selected characters objects such as Upsy Daisy's bed and the Tombliboos trousers. In the Washing activity you use Makka Pakkas sponge to wash the selected characters face and then dry them after using the Uff-Uff.

Ben's favourite part of this app is the Washing activity. He loves using the sponge to clean the characters faces and seeing the 'bubbles' (Ben is one of those kids who goes crazy for bubbles in any form). He likes finding the Pontipines in the Hiding activity and you have the added educational value in that it's another opportunity to learn to count. Ben loves music and is turning into a real little dancer so he always enjoys bopping along to the characters songs in the Dancing section with Makka Pakka being his all time favourite. I think the familiarity of all the characters, the setting and the music makes it a big hit with Ben as I'm sure it would most other little ITNG fans.

The app is available for download from the App Store for both the iPhone and as a HD version for the iPad.

Have you heard there's a new In the Night Garden app being released soon? There doesn't appear to be a date for it yet, but the screenshots I've seen look fantastic - see here. It doesn't seem as if there's buttons that will take you out to a magazine/other app link - and there's also another face wash game! I'm looking forward to playing this with my daughter.
